Density of Textile Flooring (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Laboratory Testing Reference

Summary

Density is a calculated carpet construction characteristic that describes the concentration of pile fiber within a given pile volume. Carpet density is commonly derived from face weight and pile height measurements and is frequently used to compare carpet constructions, evaluate specification compliance, and provide context when investigating appearance-retention concerns. Higher density generally indicates more pile fiber packed into a given volume, although density alone does not determine overall carpet performance. Density values should be interpreted together with fiber type, twist, pile height, construction style, maintenance history, and actual service conditions. See also ASTM D5848 Pile Weight / Face Weight Test, ASTM D5823 Pile Height / Tuft Height Test, and Flooring Laboratory Testing and Analysis.
