Bundlewrap and Penetration (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Laboratory Testing Reference

Summary

Bundlewrap and penetration evaluations are laboratory procedures used to estimate how effectively latex binder is distributed around and within tuft bundles in tufted carpet constructions. Bundlewrap describes the amount of binder surrounding the outside perimeter of a tuft bundle, while penetration describes the amount of binder that migrates into the tuft bundle structure itself. These measurements are commonly used as comparative indicators when evaluating tuft security, bearding, tuft loss, snags, edge ravel, and related performance concerns. Bundlewrap and penetration measurements provide information regarding binder distribution only and do not independently establish manufacturing defect, warranty responsibility, or field performance. No universally accepted industry test method or published industry-wide acceptance criteria currently exist for these evaluations. See also Carpet Bearding, ASTM D1335 Tuft Bind Test, and Flooring Laboratory Testing and Analysis.
