Summary
ASTM D5793 – Stitches Per Inch Test determines the stitch density of tufted carpet by measuring the number of tufting-machine needle penetrations per linear inch in the machine direction. Commonly referred to as stitches per inch (SPI), this construction characteristic is used to describe carpet structure and may be utilized in product specifications, quality-control programs, manufacturing evaluations, and laboratory investigations. The procedure requires removal of the face yarn to expose the tuft stubble embedded within the primary backing, allowing stitch frequency to be measured accurately. Results provide comparative information regarding carpet construction and should be interpreted together with carpet gauge, pile height, pile weight, density, fiber type, and other performance-related characteristics. Laboratory findings do not independently establish manufacturing defect, warranty responsibility, or field performance.
