ASTM D2047 Static Coefficient of Friction Test (Flooring)

Floor Detective® Laboratory Testing Reference

Summary

ASTM D2047 is a laboratory test used to evaluate the static coefficient of friction of dry flooring surfaces and floor-finish systems under controlled conditions. The procedure uses a James Machine to measure the force required to initiate slip between a standardized leather interface and the tested flooring surface. ASTM D2047 evaluates static slip initiation only and does not measure dynamic walking traction, gait behavior, slip recovery, or real-world pedestrian movement. Results provide comparative information regarding dry slip-initiation resistance at the time of testing and may be influenced by maintenance practices, coatings, contamination, wear, and surface condition. Laboratory findings should always be interpreted together with actual field conditions, environmental exposure, maintenance history, and flooring use characteristics.
