“Waterproof” Designation (Laminate Flooring)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

“Waterproof” laminate is a marketing designation describing enhanced resistance to limited topical moisture exposure rather than complete immunity from water-related damage. Most laminate flooring systems, including products marketed as waterproof, still utilize fiber-based cores that remain dimensionally responsive when exposed to sufficient moisture or prolonged saturation. Performance depends on core formulation, seam design, joint integrity, exposure pathway, exposure duration, installation conditions, and environmental context. Localized seam swelling, edge distortion, peaking, or core expansion may still occur when moisture bypasses protective features or exceeds intended exposure conditions. Evaluation focuses on moisture pathway, exposure duration, restraint conditions, and resulting system response rather than marketing terminology alone.
