Surface Whitening from Topical Moisture Entrapment
Surface Whitening from Topical Moisture Entrapment (Laminate Flooring)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Surface whitening from topical moisture entrapment is an appearance-related laminate flooring condition in which localized cloudy, hazy, milky, or lightened areas develop when moisture becomes trapped beneath non-breathable objects such as plant containers, trays, mats, pet bowls, or rubber-backed materials. Restricted evaporation allows moisture to remain in prolonged contact with the laminate surface and may alter the optical characteristics of the overlay layer, creating visible whitening that often corresponds closely with the object footprint. In early-stage exposure, the condition is commonly limited to the overlay system and does not necessarily involve structural change within the laminate core or locking system. Extended exposure near joints, bevels, or edges may increase the likelihood of moisture migration into underlying components over time. Proper evaluation requires correlation of distribution pattern, exposure history, joint condition, environmental conditions, and visible flooring-system behavior rather than appearance alone. See also Discolorations, Bubbling or Swelled Edges, and Laminate Problems for broader context.
