Hollow Sound / Acoustic Resonance (Laminate Flooring)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Hollow sound or acoustic resonance in laminate flooring is an audible tonal variation heard during walking, tapping, or normal floor use. Because laminate flooring is installed as a floating system and is not rigidly attached to the substrate, the floor assembly may naturally resonate under impact and vibration. Acoustic response may vary depending on underlayment characteristics, subfloor flatness, structural composition, room geometry, furnishings, environmental conditions, and overall flooring-system construction. In many cases, hollow sound reflects normal acoustic behavior within a floating floor system rather than structural failure, bond loss, or installation nonconformance. The condition may exist with or without measurable movement, deflection, or visible distress. Proper evaluation focuses on whether the sound correlates with measurable instability, support irregularity, joint distress, or reduced flooring-system performance rather than sound perception alone. See also Noise and Deflection, Floating Floor Requirements, and Laminate Problems for broader context.
