Summary
Lippage describes a condition in which one tile edge is higher or lower than the edge of an adjacent tile, producing a measurable elevation difference at the joint. Small elevation differences may occur in tile installations due to inherent tile warpage, manufacturing thickness tolerances, substrate flatness variation, and installation placement variables. Visual perception of lippage may also be influenced by tile reflectivity, lighting direction, and layout geometry. Industry installation standards provide evaluation references that consider measured elevation difference together with inherent tile warpage.
