Subfloor Flatness and Support Conditions (Laminate Flooring)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Subfloor flatness and support conditions directly influence the performance of floating laminate flooring systems. Laminate flooring depends on consistent substrate support beneath interconnected planks so loads can transfer evenly through the locking system and into the floor structure. Flatness refers to variation within the surface plane and is different from levelness. A floor may appear level while still containing high spots, low areas, unsupported spans, or structural movement capable of creating stress within the flooring system. When substrate conditions fall outside manufacturer requirements, the floor may bridge irregular areas, deflect under load, generate noise, stress locking joints, or develop movement-related edge and joint conditions over time. Observed symptoms alone do not independently establish laminate manufacturing nonconformance. Proper interpretation requires correlation of support condition, flatness, structural behavior, underlayment interaction, moisture conditions, and symptom distribution before conclusions are reached. See also Floating Floor Requirements, Locking System Failure, and Laminate Problems for broader context.
