Summary

Spin finish is a lubricant applied to synthetic carpet fibers during yarn manufacturing to reduce friction and prevent fiber damage during processing. After tufting, the carpet is normally scoured to remove or substantially reduce this lubricant. When residual spin finish remains, it may attract soil rapidly and create an oily or darkened appearance often described as oil lines. The condition may be evaluated alongside related conditions such as soiling and shading, which may appear similar but differ in underlying mechanism.
