Summary

Spin finish is a lubricant applied to synthetic carpet fibers during yarn manufacturing to reduce friction and minimize fiber damage during processing. After tufting, the carpet is normally scoured to remove or substantially reduce this lubricant before finishing and backing operations are completed. When residual spin finish remains on fiber surfaces, it may attract soil rapidly and create oily, darkened, or streaked appearance patterns commonly described as oil lines. The condition may resemble related appearance conditions such as Soiling or Filtration Soil, although each develops through different mechanisms and presents differently during evaluation.
