Backing Wrinkles / Backing Distortion (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Backing wrinkles, also referred to as backing distortion, are conditions in which carpet backing layers become misaligned, folded, rippled, or unevenly tensioned during manufacturing. The condition develops when backing materials shift or distort during coating, tentering, latex application, or curing processes, permanently locking the irregularity into the carpet structure. Depending on severity and construction, the distortion may remain visible only on the backing or may telegraph through to the face surface as subtle ridges, waves, or uneven texture. Backing wrinkles are generally present prior to installation and do not develop from normal traffic or maintenance activity.
