Cushion Noise (Carpet)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Cushion noise is an auditory condition in which sounds such as crackling, popping, squeaking, chirping, or tacky release occur during foot traffic on a carpeted floor system. The condition develops when components within the carpet assembly interact under load, including carpet backing, cushion materials, substrate surfaces, adhesives, seam tapes, films, or loose particulate residue. Compression, friction, adhesion, and release behavior between these materials may generate repeatable audible responses that vary with traffic patterns, environmental conditions, and system construction. Cushion noise reflects interaction within the floor system rather than a defect in carpet face fiber, yarn construction, dye stability, or surface appearance performance. See also Delamination, Installation Damage, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
