Installation Damage (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Installation damage is an installation-origin physical condition that occurs when carpet pile, yarn, or backing components are mechanically altered during cutting, stretching, positioning, trimming, or handling. The condition develops from localized force, puncture, cutting interaction, or tool contact during installation activity rather than from manufacturing variability. Installation damage commonly appears near seams, perimeters, doorways, transitions, or confined work areas and may involve cut yarns, punctures, backing disruption, sprouted tufts, or localized texture distortion. Because the condition reflects mechanical interaction during installation, patterns are generally irregular and do not follow consistent machine-direction or needle-spacing repetition associated with manufacturing-related conditions. Installation damage affects appearance and, in some cases, localized structural integrity, but does not represent a manufacturing defect. See also Top Cuts, Snags, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
