Broken Joints (Laminate Flooring)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Broken joints in laminate flooring occur when locking edges crack, crush, bend, disengage, or lose structural integrity within the floating-floor system. Once the lock is damaged, adjoining planks no longer distribute weight evenly, which may result in gaps, lifted edges, vertical movement, clicking sounds, or progressive joint separation. Joint failure commonly develops from movement restriction, excessive flexing, moisture-related expansion, improper assembly, or concentrated loading acting on weakened locking edges. The location and distribution pattern of the damage often provide important clues regarding the underlying stress mechanism. See also Locking Systems, Vertical Movement / Deflection, and Laminate Floor Problems for broader context.
