ASTM D5252 Hexapod Walker Test (Carpet Appearance Retention)

Floor Detective® Laboratory Testing Reference

Summary

The ASTM D5252 Hexapod Walker Test is a laboratory test method used to evaluate carpet appearance retention under simulated foot traffic conditions. The procedure uses a rotating drum containing a weighted six-legged impact device commonly known as a Hexapod Walker. As the drum rotates, the hexapod repeatedly tumbles and impacts the carpet surface, simulating pedestrian traffic over time. Results are visually evaluated using Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) reference appearance scales and provide comparative information regarding texture retention, crushing resistance, matting resistance, and overall appearance change. Laboratory findings do not independently establish manufacturing defect, warranty responsibility, or field causation. See also Carpet Appearance Retention, ASTM D5417 Vetterman Drum Test, and Flooring Laboratory Testing and Analysis.
