Pile Thickness Carpet Laboratory Test
Floor Detective® Laboratory Testing Reference
Summary
Pile thickness is a laboratory construction measurement used to evaluate the thickness contribution of the pile yarn portion of a carpet. The measurement may assist in carpet construction analysis, specification verification, manufacturing comparisons, and claims involving alleged thickness variation. Pile thickness is different from tuft height, pile height, total carpet thickness, face weight, and density, although these values are often reviewed together during laboratory evaluation. ASTM D5823 may be used to evaluate tuft height and tuft length, but pile thickness should be identified as a separate construction characteristic unless the laboratory report specifically states otherwise. See also Pile Height / Tuft Height, Pile Weight, and Flooring Laboratory Testing and Analysis.
