Bond Loss (Tile)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Bond loss in tile installations occurs when ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tile separates from the bonding mortar, supporting substrate, or within the mortar layer itself. The condition reflects failure somewhere within the bonded assembly rather than a single isolated material defect. Bond loss may appear as hollow-sounding tile, loose tile, cracking, movement, or tile displacement depending on the location and severity of the separation. The condition may develop shortly after installation or gradually during service as movement stress, substrate instability, moisture influence, loading conditions, or inadequate bonding support affect the assembly. Proper evaluation requires identification of the failure interface, observation of pattern and distribution, and correlation of substrate, mortar, and installation behavior before conclusions are formed. See also Tenting Tile, Tile and Stone Cracks, and Workmanship Troweling Techniques for broader context.
