Summary

Snow and ice melters commonly contain salts that dissolve into meltwater and penetrate porous stone, tile, and terrazzo surfaces. When salt-laden moisture enters the pore structure of these materials and later evaporates, the dissolved salts recrystallize within the material. This crystallization process generates internal crystallization pressure that can exceed the strength of the material matrix.
