Plasticizer migration is a material-related phenomenon in which mobile plasticizer molecules within PVC-backed flooring diffuse (move gradually) from the backing into adjacent materials or interfaces over time. Plasticizers are added to polyvinyl chloride to impart flexibility, but a portion remains physically entrained rather than chemically bonded within the polymer matrix.
