Summary

Hollow sounds in hardwood flooring are audible tonal differences that occur when portions of the floor respond differently under foot traffic or tapping. The condition reflects acoustic variation within the flooring system rather than direct confirmation of structural failure, bond loss, or installation defect. Hollow response may occur with or without measurable movement and may be influenced by installation method, subfloor flatness, adhesive distribution, fastening engagement, flooring stiffness, environmental conditions, or transitions within the structure. Floating, glue-down, nail-down, solid, and engineered flooring systems may each produce different acoustic characteristics because of differences in attachment and construction behavior. When no measurable looseness, separation, instability, or serviceability issue is present, hollow sound alone does not independently establish manufacturing defect or installation nonconformance. Proper evaluation focuses on whether the sound correlates with measurable movement, attachment concerns, separation, or reduced flooring-system performance.
