Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Grain raise is an appearance-related surface condition in hardwood flooring in which exposed wood fibers swell and lift, creating a rough, textured, or slightly fuzzy surface profile. The condition develops when moisture contacts exposed wood fibers during finishing, environmental fluctuation, cleaning, or topical moisture exposure. Grain raise reflects movement within the wood substrate itself rather than failure of the finish film alone. Visibility may vary depending on species characteristics, sanding preparation, finish type, lighting conditions, and the amount of moisture introduced during the finishing or occupancy cycle. Open-grain and softer earlywood structures commonly exhibit greater visible fiber response. In the absence of coating adhesion loss, finish delamination, or structural instability, grain raise does not independently establish manufacturing defect or installation nonconformance. Proper evaluation requires distinguishing raised wood fibers from finish contamination, coating irregularity, surface residue, or broader finish-system failure. See also Grain Raise Hardwood Finish Issue, Crawling Hardwood Finish, and Hardwood Floor Problems for broader context.
