Early Wear – Pet Damage (Hardwood)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Early wear associated with pet activity is a service-related hardwood flooring condition caused by repeated claw interaction with the finish surface and underlying wood fibers. Concentrated point loading during running, pivoting, traction-seeking movement, or repetitive traffic may disrupt finish layers, compress softer grain structures, and create visible wear patterns over time. The condition commonly appears as scratching, gouging, dulling, sheen variation, compression ridging, or localized discoloration concentrated within active pet pathways and transition areas. Visibility is often influenced by species hardness, finish type, lighting angle, surface texture, and maintenance conditions. Pet-related wear affects surface appearance and localized finish performance rather than structural flooring integrity in most cases. Proper classification requires separating service-use interaction from coating instability, manufacturing irregularity, moisture-related deterioration, or broader finish-system failure. See also Scratching, Dents, and Impact Damage, Peeling Finish, and Hardwood Floor Problems for broader context.
