Summary

Carpet installed on steps is subjected to concentrated traffic and repeated flexing that exceeds normal flat-floor conditions. Stair use places compressive, shear, and bending forces on treads and nosing edges, accelerating crushing, soiling, and visible appearance change. The condition may be evaluated alongside related issues such as crushing, matting, and soiling, which may develop more rapidly on stairs due to traffic concentration. Buckling or looseness may also occur if proper tension and attachment are not maintained.
