Dark or Light Bands at Seams (Barber Pole Yarn Carpets)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Dark or light bands at seams in barber pole yarn carpets are appearance-related conditions caused by improper yarn row alignment during seam construction. Barber pole carpet constructions use alternating light and dark yarn rows arranged in a repeating sequence to balance surface reflectance across the installation. When adjoining breadths are seamed without maintaining the intended row sequence, identical yarn rows may align at the seam, creating localized dark or light banding that becomes visible under directional or low-angle lighting. The condition is confined to seam locations and reflects optical contrast caused by reflectance behavior rather than dye variation, fiber damage, backing failure, or manufacturing defect. See also Side Match, Shading, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
