Dark or Light Line at the Seam (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Dark or light line at the seam is an appearance condition where a visible shaded band forms directly above a carpet seam. The condition develops when pile orientation changes in the seam area due to heat, pressure, or movement during hot-melt seam construction. The band is typically centered over the seam and often corresponds to the seam tape location beneath the carpet backing. The appearance commonly reverses from dark to light when viewed from opposite directions, indicating a pile-direction or reflectance condition rather than true color variation. The condition affects appearance only and does not indicate fiber damage, backing failure, or structural deterioration of the carpet system. See also Seam Overheating, Seam Peaking, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
