Bearding (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Bearding is a surface condition in which some of the tiny filaments that make up each carpet yarn work partially loose and create a hairy or fuzzy appearance on the surface of the carpet. The yarn bundle itself remains in place, but individual filaments extend outward and become more visible. Bearding is most commonly seen in bulk continuous filament (BCF) constructions but may occur in other yarn systems depending on how the yarn is built and how the tuft is secured in the backing. In many cases, bearding affects surface appearance only. However, if binder distribution within the tuft structure is materially below applicable product criteria, restraint of individual filaments may be reduced and contribute to stabilization concerns. Proper evaluation requires
