Missing Row (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Missing rows are manufacturing-origin tufting conditions in which yarn is absent from one or more needle positions during production. The condition develops when yarn feed is interrupted because of yarn breakage, yarn pullout, needle malfunction, or temporary feed interruption during tufting. Missing rows commonly appear as narrow linear gaps, reduced-density rows, or localized texture irregularities aligned in the machine direction and may vary in visibility depending on carpet construction, lighting angle, and whether manufacturing mending was performed. The condition affects appearance and surface continuity only and does not independently reduce backing integrity, tuft bind, durability, or long-term structural performance. Missing rows differ from distortion or pile-height variation conditions because the yarn itself is absent rather than displaced or compressed. See also Snags, Installation Damage, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
