Summary
Shift marks, also referred to as chop marks, are manufacturing-origin appearance conditions caused by variation in tuft formation during step-over stitch tufting processes. The condition develops when yarn tension, backing tension, stitch formation, or needle timing becomes inconsistent during directional needle shift, producing alternating rows of slightly different pile height across the carpet width. These variations alter surface reflectance and create visible banding or pattern repetition that commonly follows machine repeat intervals. The condition often continues across seams and installation areas because it originates during tufting rather than installation or traffic exposure. Shift marks affect appearance uniformity only and do not inherently reduce tuft bind, backing integrity, or structural performance.
