Shearing Defect (Carpet)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Shearing defects are manufacturing-origin appearance conditions caused by inconsistent pile-height cutting during the carpet shearing process. Shearing establishes surface uniformity by trimming yarn tips to a consistent height after tufting and backing operations. When shear depth varies, exposed yarn tip height becomes inconsistent, producing visible texture variation, banding, or tonal change caused by altered light reflectance across the carpet surface. The condition commonly continues across seams and installation areas because it originates during manufacturing rather than installation or traffic exposure. Shearing defects affect appearance uniformity but do not inherently reduce tuft bind, backing integrity, or structural performance. See also Shadows, Crushing, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
