Shadows (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Carpet shadows are lighting-related appearance conditions in which localized darkened or slightly color-shifted areas develop from environmental light interaction rather than changes in the carpet material itself. The condition occurs when light is blocked, reduced, redirected, or reflected by surrounding features, creating visible contrast across the carpet surface. These visual effects may shift, lessen, or disappear as lighting angle or viewing position changes and are distinct from conditions involving pile distortion or true color variation. Carpet fiber, dye distribution, texture, and construction remain unchanged, and the condition does not independently establish material defect or performance failure. See also Shading, Footprints, and Vacuum Marks, Dark or Light Line at the Seam, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
