Caliber Sizing / Facial Dimension Variation (Tile)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Caliber sizing and facial dimension variation describe inherent differences in tile face size or thickness within ceramic, porcelain, and natural stone products. Fired ceramic materials undergo dimensional change during drying and kiln firing as moisture is removed and the tile body densifies. Natural stone tile may also exhibit dimensional variation related to geological structure and fabrication processes. Because these materials naturally contain dimensional variation from manufacturing and fabrication processes, consistency is managed through sorting and tolerance systems rather than eliminated entirely. Minor dimensional variation may influence grout-joint alignment, layout appearance, and visual uniformity, particularly in larger-format tile or installations using narrow grout joints. Proper evaluation requires correlation of measured tile dimensions, layout configuration, grout-joint selection, and manufacturing tolerance context before conclusions are formed. See also Lippage, Warpage, and Tile and Stone Floor Problems for broader context.
