Powdery or Soft Grout Joints (Tile)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Powdery or soft grout joints occur when cementitious grout fails to develop normal hardness or internal cohesion during curing and early service life. The condition commonly develops when hydration of the cement matrix is disrupted by excess water, rapid moisture loss, environmental exposure, improper cleanup, or installation-related influences. Powdery grout may appear as chalking surfaces, friable joint edges, shallow surface erosion, or deeper loss of cohesion depending on the severity and depth of the condition. In many cases, the condition reflects grout curing behavior and installation environment rather than failure of the tile material itself. Proper evaluation requires consideration of grout hardness, depth integrity, distribution patterns, curing conditions, and overall installation behavior before conclusions are formed. See also Grout Failures, Pin Holes (Grout), and Tile and Stone Floor Problems for broader context.
