Summary
Shake, sometimes referred to as wind shake or ring shake, is a separation within the wood structure that develops between annual growth rings and follows the grain direction. The condition forms while the tree is still standing and results from internal growth stresses and natural structural differences within the wood. Wind loading and other natural forces may contribute to this separation. Shake exists prior to harvesting and manufacturing and may remain concealed until machining, sanding, installation, finishing, or environmental changes make it
