Pilling (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Pilling is an appearance condition in which small balls or nodules of tangled surface fibers form on the carpet. The condition develops when loose filaments slip from yarn bundles and entangle under compressive and shear forces created by traffic and pivoting movement. Pills accumulate at the pile surface and may increase in size as additional loose fibers attach over time. Pilling affects surface appearance only and does not involve backing failure, tuft loss, or structural breakdown of the carpet system. See also Matting, Crushing, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
