Summary
J-cut rows are a manufacturing-origin tufting condition that occurs when individual tufts are formed with unequal leg lengths during the tufting (yarn insertion) process. One leg of the tuft retracts more than the opposing leg as the needle withdraws and the backing advances, creating a subtle but repeatable height difference within a row. This results in a visible low row and, in some cases, an adjacent high row aligned in the machine (lengthwise manufacturing) direction.
