Shake (Wind Shake / Ring Shake) (Hardwood Flooring)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Shake, sometimes referred to as wind shake or ring shake, is a wood-growth separation that develops within the wood structure before the tree is harvested. The condition commonly follows annual growth-ring orientation and results from natural growth stresses, internal wood structure characteristics, and environmental loading acting on the standing tree. Shake may remain concealed through manufacturing, grading, installation, or early occupancy conditions before later becoming visible during sanding, finishing, environmental fluctuation, or seasonal moisture change. Environmental exposure may widen or reveal an existing separation, but does not create the original condition. Shake is generally classified as a naturally occurring wood characteristic rather than an installation-related condition.
