Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Gaps in hardwood flooring are spaces that appear between adjacent boards as wood gains or loses moisture in response to interior environmental conditions. Some seasonal gapping is expected as wood contracts during drier periods and expands during more humid periods. Abnormal gaps are more concerning when they remain open beyond seasonal change, appear excessive for the flooring type, or occur with movement, distortion, loose boards, or serviceability concerns. Solid and engineered hardwood may both gap, but the movement behavior differs because solid wood moves primarily across its width while engineered flooring may also respond through layered construction, core behavior, end-joint movement, or locking-system interaction. Proper evaluation separates normal seasonal movement from abnormal side gaps, end gaps, installation-related separation, subfloor movement, and moisture-related distortion. See also Hardwood Floor Acclimation, Panelization, and Hardwood Floor Problems for broader context.
