Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Sanding marks are appearance-related surface conditions caused by abrasion during the sanding and finishing of hardwood flooring. The condition reflects surface texture variation created by sanding equipment interaction rather than manufacturing defect or structural flooring failure. Sanding marks may appear as linear scratches, swirl patterns, ripple effects, chatter, cross-grain scratches, or subtle texture differences between field and perimeter areas. Visibility commonly increases after staining or finishing because coatings and reflected light emphasize surface texture variation. The condition is cosmetic in nature and evaluation focuses on abrasion pattern, lighting conditions, sanding sequence, and overall visibility under normal viewing conditions. See also Applicator Marks, Picture Framing Halo Effect, and Hardwood Floor Problems for broader context.
