Picture Framing (Halo Effect)
Picture Framing / Halo Effect (Hardwood Flooring)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Picture framing, also called halo effect, is an appearance condition in hardwood flooring where perimeter areas show a visible color, sheen, or reflectivity difference from the main field of the floor. The condition commonly relates to differences in sanding, edging, blending, stain absorption, or finish application near walls and room edges. It affects surface appearance rather than structural wood performance. Visibility may increase with darker stains, reflective finishes, directional lighting, and large open rooms. Proper evaluation focuses on whether the perimeter pattern aligns with edging zones, coating overlap, localized repair, or surface-preparation differences.
