Panelization (Hardwood Flooring)
Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide
Summary
Panelization is a repeating pattern of gaps, peaks, ridges, depressions, or contour variation in hardwood flooring that corresponds with underlying subfloor panel seams, panel layout, or framing intervals. The condition reflects movement or profile change within the subfloor assembly that transfers through the finished flooring system. Panelization may develop from seasonal dimensional movement, subfloor shrinkage, panel edge swelling, structural deflection, moisture imbalance, or uneven restraint within the flooring assembly. Seasonal panelization may fluctuate as humidity conditions change, while moisture-related panel deformation may create more abrupt or persistent seam-related surface variation. The condition may appear as repeating gaps, repeated edge elevation, or patterned surface contour aligned with the subfloor configuration beneath the flooring system. Proper evaluation focuses on the relationship between the visible flooring pattern and the underlying substrate assembly rather than assuming isolated board distortion or flooring manufacturing defect. See also Wood Distortion, Water Damage, and Hardwood Floor Problems for broader context.
