Footprint tracking, shading, and crushing are appearance-related carpet conditions that occur when pile yarns respond differently to pressure, orientation change, and sustained compression. Footprint tracking results from temporary pile displacement under foot pressure, shading (pile reversal) results from directional pile orientation change (fiber lay direction shift), and crushing results from reduced pile resilience (ability to recover after compression).
