Carpet Turned / Opposing Pile Direction (Broadloom Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Carpet turned, also referred to as opposing pile direction, is an appearance condition in which adjoining breadths of broadloom carpet are installed with pile oriented in opposite directions across a seam. Broadloom carpet is manufactured with a defined pile direction that influences how light reflects from the surface, and reversing one breadth relative to another creates a noticeable light and dark contrast concentrated at seam lines. The visual effect commonly reverses when viewed from opposite ends of the room and may become more pronounced under directional or low-angle lighting conditions. The condition is visual in nature and does not indicate backing failure, seam separation, or loss of structural performance. See also Shading, Pile Reversal, and Carpet Problems for broader context.
