Summary

Carpet shedding is a fiber-release condition in which loose or short fibers detach from the carpet pile during normal use and maintenance. The condition is most commonly associated with staple yarn constructions, though wool and certain woven products may also exhibit early fiber release. Shedding occurs when short fibers within the yarn bundle are not fully secured into the backing and are retained primarily by yarn twist and construction. The condition may be evaluated alongside related conditions such as pilling and tuft bind failure, which may appear similar but differ in underlying mechanism.

Early traffic and vacuuming remove these loose fibers, which may appear as fuzz on the surface, collect in vacuum equipment, or wrap around brushes and beater bars. Shedding is typically most noticeable during the initial service period and ….
