Crowning is a dimensional distortion in hardwood flooring in which the center of the board is elevated relative to the edges, creating a convex surface profile. The condition reflects differential movement through the thickness of the wood and is not a surface-wear or finish defect. Crowning most often develops after prior moisture imbalance, particularly when a previously cupped floor has been sanded flat before internal moisture levels have stabilized.
