Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Carpet shearing defects are manufacturing-origin appearance conditions caused by inconsistent pile-height cutting during the shearing process. Shearing establishes surface uniformity by trimming yarn tips to a consistent height after tufting and backing. When shear depth varies across the carpet width or along the roll length, yarn tip height becomes inconsistent, producing visible texture variation or banding. The condition may be evaluated alongside related appearance conditions such as shadows and crushing, which may appear similar but differ in underlying mechanism.

The visual effect results from uneven fiber-tip height interacting with light rather than dye variation. These differences are typically present at installation, may extend across seams, and remain consistent regardless of traffic or maintenance. The condition affects surface appearance and uniformity and is often mistaken for …..
