Summary
Carpet shadows are lighting-related appearance conditions in which localized darkened or slightly color-shifted areas appear due to changes in light exposure rather than changes in the carpet material. The condition occurs when light is blocked, reduced, absorbed, or redirected by elements within the space, creating visible contrast across the carpet surface. These areas may appear darker, cooler, or warmer in tone depending on surrounding surfaces and lighting conditions. Carpet shadows may be evaluated alongside related appearance conditions such as crushing and dark or light line at the seam, which may appear similar but differ in underlying mechanism.
The carpet’s color, texture, and construction remain uniform across both affected and unaffected areas. The appearance may shift, intensify, or disappear as lighting angle, intensity, or viewing position changes. Environmental features such as tinted windows, colored walls, or reflective surfaces may influence the visible tone of the shadowed area.
