What you need to know

The carpet is typically sheared following the backing process, as an in-line process.  This trims off any protruding tufts and fuzz, leaving a very level surface.

Some carpet constructions are sheared to develop the design imparted in the tufting process.  Where a pattern is formed with tufts of various heights, the uppermost is sheared away, creating cut pile tufts.  This shows high contrast compared against the adjacent loop pile tufts, as the cut ends of the fibers absorb far more light than the loops, which reflect light well.
