Summary
Fume fading, including ozone-related fading, is an environmentally induced appearance condition that occurs when airborne reactive gases chemically oxidize (chemically alter through oxygen interaction) carpet dye molecules at the fiber surface. Oxidizing pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) or ozone (O₃) interact with dye structures, weakening or rearranging molecular bonds and producing a permanent color shift.
