Backing Wrinkles / Backing Distortion (Carpet)

Floor Detective® Claims and Conditions Guide

Summary

Backing wrinkles, also referred to as backing distortion, are conditions in which carpet backing layers become misaligned, folded, or unevenly tensioned during manufacturing. The condition develops when backing materials are secured in a distorted position during latex application and curing, locking the irregularity into the carpet structure. It may resemble buckling or wrinkling or telegraphing, but originates within the backing rather than from installation or substrate conditions. Depending on severity, the distortion may be visible on the backing only or may affect the face surface. The condition is generally present prior to installation and does not develop from normal use or maintenance. Backing wrinkles affect structure and appearance but do not independently indicate installation nonconformance.

What You Need to Know

• Backing wrinkles originate from misalignment or uneven tension during manufacturing.
• The condition becomes fixed when latex adhesive is applied and cured.
• Distortion may be visible on the backing or telegraph to the face surface. ….
