Accurate carpet fiber identification is a foundational step in evaluating appearance concerns, chemical damage, wear behavior, and performance-related claims. Fiber type directly influences response to heat, flame, cleaning chemistry, moisture, abrasion, and environmental exposure. Field screening methods may provide preliminary indicators; however, no single field method is definitive. Laboratory confirmation provides the highest level of reliability when fiber content is disputed or materially relevant to claim interpretation. Fiber classification supports mechanism-based analysis and does not independently assign responsibility.
